All modern vehicles come equipped with an onboard computer diagnostic system (OBD II) that constantly monitors your vehicle's major operating systems and most importantly the engine and transmission). The main purpose of monitoring these systems is to insure that the vehicle is operating at top efficiency with the lowest possible emissions. That means your vehicle's electronics need to constantly adjust and fine-tune various parameters according to driving conditions. When any of these parameters do not fall within the acceptable range, your CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is lit to warn you.
There are two kinds of CHECK ENGINE LIGHT alerts:
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT or SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT ILLUMINATED
Is usually a less severe problem that shouldn't cause immediate problems but needs to be checked as soon as possible. It will almost certainly cause an increase in emissions and a decrease in fuel economy-which can be robbing you of up to 20% fuel efficiency at each fill-up.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT or SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT FLASHING
Means your vehicle senses a critical system error, such as a major cylinder misfire and you need immediate attention before potentially breaking down and possibly damaging other critical and expensive parts. In this case, the driver should park and shut off the vehicle immediately. Continuing to drive can lead to serious engine or emissions system damage or can leave you stranded.

UNDERSTANDING DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS:
OIL LIGHT
Indicates your engine has dangerously low oil pressure. Do Not Keep Driving! Let engine sit and check oil level. Add oil if it’s low and have the car checked immediately.
TEMPERATURE LIGHT
When this light comes on, your engine is overheating. Do Not Keep Driving! If you continue to drive, you can cause serious engine damage. There is a problem with the cooling system of your car.
ABS LIGHT, ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
If this light comes on, it means there is a fault with the ABS system in the car and it disabled itself. This should have no effect on normal braking but ABS will NOT be available in an emergency situation or when braking on a wet or slick surface. Definitely have it checked as soon as possible.
TPMS, TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM
The TPMS warning light comes on when any of your vehicle’s tires is 25% under-inflated. Starting with all 2008 model year vehicles, a TPMS is required by the federal government. Tire pressure should be checked on a regular basis. The recommended tire pressure can be found in your vehicle’s owner’s manual or on the tire placard attached to the vehicle door edge, doorpost, glove box door or fuel door. The recommended correct air pressure in your tires is designed to provide a combination of a comfortable ride, load carrying ability, and rolling resistance. It also helps your tires last longer, your car handles better and safer, and helps you save money on fuel.
BRAKE LIGHT, BRAKE WARNING LIGHT
This light means there is something wrong with the braking system. The hydraulic pressure in the car has been lost or the brake fluid level is dangerously low. This is a potentially dangerous situation because it can cause the brakes to fail. The leaking fluid can also contaminate the brake linings, make them slippery, and can cause a dangerous situation when braking. Have this system checked immediately.
